'Less Spoken Fact'
India’s status as Global super power is increasing. We come
across several statistics which indicates growth here but are these numbers
justified? We accept figure that are shown to us again and again as facts. What
about the figure which nobody tells? Some are related to State of children
deprived of basic needs.
Child
mortality rates have doubled in India's slums. There are many children
with empty stomachs while some enjoy their over-priced dishes. Many are
deprived of basic amenities and nutrition essential for life but we praise only
success stories of ineffective Govt. plans. Plans which were implemented ages
ago yet couldn't eliminate diseases, from which many parts of globe were immune
decades ago. World Bank predicts that India's economy will be the
fastest-growing by next year and the country is an influential force within the
G20, World Health Organisation figures show it ranks 171st out of 175 countries
for public health spending.
Narrow
paths, narrower houses have no space for people, we can imagine the state of
sanitation there. People residing in slums are more vulnerable to diseases. Due
to Poor Sanitation and contamination of drinking water diseases like Diarrhoea,
Juan Dice, Parasitic infestation and faecal oral epidemics are very common in
such areas. Here, 15 hundred
thousand children die each day because of diarrhoea and every 15 seconds a
child dies because of water borne diseases, more than 400,000 in their first 24 hours. According to Gethin Chamberlain, nearly 2 million Indian children die under five
each day and that is the highest number all over the world. Even in the capital, Delhi, where an estimated 20% of people
live in slums, the infant mortality rate is reported to have doubled in a year,
though city authorities dispute this.
We
know there are many government run Health camps, centres and hospitals and we
also know how well organised they are. Just constructing a structure to provide
facilities don’t help, ‘Efficient Management’ is also important. Proper access
to medical facilities is also a right of every individual, may be not written
anywhere, that cannot be denied.
